Three former Turkish Super Lig referees have expressed their views on Super Eagles ace, Paul Onuachu, over his disallowed goal and subsequent red card during Trabzonspor’s loss to Fenerbahçe.

Bahattin Duran stated that VAR’s intervention was unjustified, arguing that Onuachu’s actions were not a clear or obvious foul and should not have warranted VAR review. He noted that Onuachu’s positioning was natural and did not involve a reckless move.

Deniz Çoban emphasised that if the referee had initially called the play, there would have been little controversy. He reiterated that VAR’s intervention was incorrect, as there was no clear violation to warrant it.

Bülent Yıldırım also deemed the VAR intervention wrong, explaining that the Fenerbahçe player did not gain control of the ball. He stated a foul could only be called for careless play but ruled out a clear violation.

Regarding Onuachu’s applause towards the referee in the 45+6th minute, Yıldırım pointed out that it was a protest and warranted a second yellow card. Duran and Çoban agreed, noting that his actions were deserving of a sending-off.
