From Adanna Nnamani, Abuja
Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has called for stronger and more effective public institutions across Africa as a critical step toward addressing the continent’s development challenges.
He made the call in Abuja during the graduation ceremony of Cohort 5 of the AIG Public Leaders Programme (AIG-PLP), where 69 senior public officials from seven African countries were celebrated for completing the leadership initiative organised by the Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation.
The AIG Public Leaders Programme is designed to equip senior public officials with leadership and policy skills needed to strengthen governance and institutional effectiveness across Africa.
The minister stressed that Africa’s greatest strength lies in its people and urged public sector leaders to focus on reforms that strengthen governance systems and deliver long-term benefits for citizens.

Tunji-Ojo, who noted that inefficiencies within public institutions have continued to hinder development, said reform-driven leadership is essential to overcoming challenges such as insecurity, underdevelopment and economic hardship across the continent.
“If we understand the true meaning of service, Africa will have a different story to tell. Leadership in public service must ensure decisions benefit future generations,” Tunji-Ojo stated.
Chairman of the Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, itemised the strategic importance of cultivating reform-minded leaders. He said Africa’s future depends largely on the quality of leadership within its public institutions.
“Transforming these institutions demands leaders who deeply understand systems, embrace necessary trade-offs and drive reform from within,” he said.
