Tuggar resigns as Minister of Foreign Affairs

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has resigned from his position in the cabinet of President Bola Tinubu.

The development was confirmed by the spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa.

Tuggar’s decision is premised on his ambition to contest for the 2027 governorship election in Bauchi State.

Ebienfa said: “The resignation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs is confirmed.” President Tinubu had directed all political appointees vying for the 2027 general elections to resign by March 31, 2026.

The President’s directive, which was communicated through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, specifically directed Ministers, Special Advisers, Director-Generals and Chief Executive Officers of government-owned institutions to comply with the Electoral Act.

Also confirming Tuggar’s resignation, his Special Assistant on Media and Communications Strategy, Alkasim Abdulkadir, in a statement in Abuja, said Tuggar, in his letter of resignation, expressed profound gratitude to President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve the nation and to contribute to the implementation of the President’s 4D foreign policy strategy as a guiding framework for Nigeria’s foreign policy.

“Ambassador Tuggar also expressed his sincere appreciation to the management and staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as members of the diplomatic community, for their cooperation and support throughout his tenure.

“During his time in office, the Minister demonstrated strong leadership and commitment to advancing Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives. His tenure was marked by several notable achievements, advancing people-centred diplomacy through humanitarian evacuations, scholarship facilitation and sustained support for Nigerians abroad, enhancing diaspora engagement, including the development of a structured Nigerians-in-Diaspora database to deepen national participation. It was also a time of deepening bilateral and multilateral relations through strategic engagements with key traditional partners and regional alliances, especially in the global south. His tenure will be remembered for promoting regional and security cooperation and the formation of the regional partnership for democracy (RPD), driving economic diplomacy by positioning Nigeria as an attractive destination for foreign investment, particularly in the energy sector.

“Facilitating diplomatic resolutions that led to the release of detained Nigerians abroad and strengthened bilateral relations.

“He submitted his letter of resignation to the SGF’s office before the stipulated March 31 date for political office holders to hand over their resignations as stipulated by the Electoral Act and instructed by President Tinubu. Dr. Abubakar Kana, Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, received the letter on behalf of the office of the Secretary to the Government.”

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has received agreemo for some of the ambassador-designate.

Spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, confirmed the receipt of the agreemo in Abuja.

Ebienfa said: “I wish to inform you that the process of receiving Agrèmènts from the countries the Ambassadors-designate are posted to is ongoing.

“We have received agreements from the United Kingdom, France, United States of America, Ireland, Qatar, Benin Republic, Ethiopia/Djibouti, Senegal and Sierra-Leone, among others.”

The spokesperson further said the date for the induction ceremony would be made public when finalised and confirmed by the Presidency.
