The Renewal Group (TRG), a political pressure group, has endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for reelection in the 2027 presidential poll and thrown its weight behind Lagos State Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, as its preferred candidate for the Lagos governorship race, with TRG Convener Lai Omotola announcing the endorsements during a press conference held in Maryland, Lagos.
Explaining the group’s support for Tinubu’s second term ambition, Omotola said the decision was anchored on the principle of power rotation, equity and continuity in governance, arguing that since the presidency is currently occupied by the South, it should remain in the region to preserve political balance and national stability.
He maintained that despite prevailing economic and social challenges, the Tinubu administration had sustained political stability through effective synergy between the executive and legislative arms of government, adding that allocations accruing to the 36 states had improved significantly under the current administration.
“When you aggregate the positives and the negatives, for the sake of continuity, we should allow him to complete his tenure,” he stated.

On Lagos politics, Omotola said the group endorsed Hamzat because his emergence would mark the first organic political transition in Lagos State, where a deputy governor directly succeeds a sitting governor.
“He has worked within the inner circle of government and we believe he will perform well,” he said, describing Hamzat as an experienced and grounded politician capable of sustaining Lagos State’s developmental trajectory.
Omotola dismissed the strength of opposition parties, insisting that they currently lack a formidable unifying figure capable of effectively challenging an incumbent administration, and predicted increased voter participation in the 2027 general elections as Nigerians became more politically conscious.
He stressed that Nigeria’s economic recovery would depend largely on productivity, industrialisation and sustained construction activities, adding that government must continue to create an enabling environment for growth.
“For Nigeria to work, Nigerians must work. We are talking about productive work. The only way we can turn the nation around is through a productive economy,” he said.
