Travellers heading to various destinations for the Christmas festivities have expressed their excitement and gratitude for the Federal Government’s 50 per cent subsidised holiday transport services.

The initiative, launched by President Bola Tinubu, aims to ease the burden of travel during the festive season by providing affordable transport options for citizens.

Officially flagged off by the Minister of Transportation, Sen. Said Alkali, the initiative covers both road and rail transport services and is scheduled to run from December 24, 2024, to January 5, 2025.

It has been warmly received by travellers across the country, with many praising the government’s commitment to alleviating the financial strain caused by the current economic challenges.

At the launch in Abuja, travellers gathered at Eagle Square, where they boarded the subsidised transport services to their various destinations.

Michael Olowo, who was heading to Lagos, expressed his appreciation for the initiative. “I am happy that I can travel to Lagos at a cheaper rate to spend Christmas with my family,” he said. “I also urge the Federal Government to continue supporting Nigerians by reducing fuel prices to N300 or N400 per liter.”

In addition to the road transport services, the government has also enhanced railway services, which began operating last week and are expected to transport 20,000 passengers daily. Road services are projected to move 288,644 passengers across 144 routes, while rail services aim to serve an additional 300,000 travelers during the 13-day period.

The government’s strategic deployment of over 700 vehicles, including hybrid buses running on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and conventional fuel, underscores its commitment to both cost reduction and sustainability. While some routes face challenges with CNG availability, the government has made adequate refueling arrangements to ensure uninterrupted service.

Adeleye Adeboye, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, highlighted the government’s dedication to affordable and accessible travel, particularly during the festive season.

“This initiative demonstrates the government’s unwavering commitment to supporting Nigerians during the holidays,” Adeboye said, expressing gratitude to President Tinubu for prioritizing the welfare of citizens through such policies.

The initiative has also received praise from Muhammad Abubakar, representing the Road Transport Employers of Nigeria (RTEAN), who lauded the Federal Government’s proactive approach. “This initiative allows families to reconnect during the holidays, something many could not afford in previous years,” Abubakar remarked. He emphasised the crucial role transport unions play in the success of the program and reiterated RTEAN’s commitment to ensuring safe and comfortable travel for all Nigerians.
