Once again, billionaire tycoon, Tony O. Elumelu has proven that he is one of Nigeria’s most influential personalities. On Saturday, April 18, the crème of Nigeria’s political and business circles converged in the serene, semi-urban community of Onicha Olona in Aniocha North Local Government of Delta State to honour him as the remains of his beloved father-in-law and boardroom guru, Chief Israel Chinwuba Ogbue, were laid to rest.

The deceased, father of Dr. Awele Elumelu, passed away on February 18, 2026, at age 99. After two months of adequate preparation, the Ogbue and Elumelu plotted a three-day funeral extravaganza characterised by unparalleled grandeur and heartfelt tributes.

The funeral rites started with a night of tributes on Thursday, April 17 at St Peter’s Anglican Church, Onicha Olona where family members and associates described the late Ogbue as a bridge-builder whose life was defined by service, integrity, and faith. It climaxed on Saturday with a funeral service at the same St Peter’s Anglican Church, Onicha Olona. The Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Asaba, Rt Rev Kingsley Obuh, who officiated at the service, described the deceased as a devoted Christian and a committed member of the church, noting his contributions to religious and community development.

Late Ogbue was later interred at a private ceremony. It was followed by a grand reception that was well attended by the high and mighty. Vice President Kashim Shettima led the dignitaries including several state governors and other top Nigerians.

Tributes poured in from across Nigeria’s business and civic space. For the Chairman of UBA Group, it was an opportunity to celebrate the memories of his father-in-law who he said had a legacy rooted in deep unwavering faith and a devoted husband, loving father, and proud patriarch whose greatest joy was his family.
