An All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Abdulhakeem Adegoke Alawuje, has said that the ongoing reforms of President Bola Tinubu are posing a major challenge to individuals and groups who have allegedly profited from Nigeria’s longstanding economic and security challenges.

In a statement, Alawuje said President Tinubu’s administration is pursuing reforms aimed at addressing the root causes of the country’s problems, despite criticism from some quarters.

According to him, the president places greater emphasis on competence, skills, knowledge, and capacity than on ethnic, religious, or regional considerations.

“President Tinubu is a leader who values competence, skills, knowledge, and capacity above considerations of region, religion, or ethnicity,” Alawuje said. “Like every human being, he cannot be expected to be perfect, but he should be judged by his commitment to national development.”

The APC stalwart argued that some critics of the administration were driven by personal interests and were unwilling to acknowledge what they considered positive achievements of the government.

“Some people are more interested in promoting negative narratives than presenting a balanced assessment of government policies,” he said, adding that many supporters of the administration respond to criticism because “Nigerians will continue to live together as one nation regardless of political differences.”

Alawuje expressed confidence in Tinubu’s ability to deliver on his mandate, stressing that rebuilding a country after years of accumulated challenges requires patience and careful planning.

“It does not take much effort to destroy a structure,” he said. “But rebuilding it requires a deliberate process, strategic planning, and time. When a building collapses, it cannot be reconstructed overnight. It requires quality materials, proper planning, and patience.”

Speaking on Nigeria’s security and economic challenges, Alawuje claimed that while those behind the country’s problems may not be stronger than the Nigerian state, some allegedly enjoy the backing of influential international collaborators who benefit from instability.

“The country’s real enemies are not necessarily those who openly criticise the government on social media,” he said. “There are hidden actors who allegedly fuel insecurity and instability while working to undermine government successes and amplify its shortcomings.”

He also lamented what he described as the tendency of Nigerians to become divided along ethnic and religious lines instead of pursuing common national interests.

“We often allow ourselves to be divided by ethnicity and religion instead of focusing on our collective responsibilities. Unity and cooperation remain essential for sustainable national progress,” he said.

Alawuje maintained that national development cannot be achieved by any single region acting alone, arguing that every part of the country has unique strengths that should be harnessed for national growth.

“Effective leadership is about identifying the strengths of every region and assigning responsibilities based on competence and comparative advantage,” he stated.

The APC chieftain further claimed that President Tinubu’s economic reforms had attracted international attention and disrupted interests that previously benefited from Nigeria’s weaknesses.

He urged Nigerians to remain vigilant against what he described as misinformation and divisive propaganda, saying such narratives distract the country from addressing its real challenges.

Alawuje also expressed concern that some people had politicised virtually every national issue, including the achievements of Nigeria’s security agencies, simply because such successes occurred under the current administration.

He called on Nigerians to give the president more time and support to implement his policies, insisting that the administration should ultimately be judged by its long-term results.

“President Tinubu understands the root causes of many of Nigeria’s longstanding challenges and is addressing them gradually,” he said. “Lasting results, rather than rhetoric, will ultimately determine public judgment.”

Drawing a distinction between previous election cycles and the next general election, Alawuje argued that “the political circumstances of 2015 are different from those of 2027,” adding that President Tinubu should be evaluated on the basis of his own record and leadership.
