President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his confidence in Nigeria’s national unity, emphasising that the bonds uniting Nigerians surpass any political disagreements.

In statement released by Special Adviser, Media and Publicity to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Yomi Odunuga, the President praised Olabode George for his invaluable counsel to the administration despite their long-standing political differences.

Speaking through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, at George’s 80th birthday celebration and memoir launch in Lagos on Friday, President Tinubu described the occasion as a tribute to a distinguished elder statesman and dedicated public servant.

He highlighted that George’s invitation symbolizss the enduring Nigerian and Lagos spirit marked by shared history, humanity, and neighborliness. Stressing national cohesion, Tinubu said, “As politicians, we can shout and disagree. Still, the values that bind us together as members of the same household living in different rooms are more enduring and stronger than what divides us.”

He acknowledged that though he and George have stood on opposite sides since 1999, mutual respect remains rooted in their common commitment to Nigeria’s advancement. “Since assuming office, Chief George has offered valuable counsel through his public interventions on national issues,” Tinubu noted.

Celebrating George’s milestone, the President called it a testament to divine grace and resilience, recalling with humor George’s earlier remark that he would go into exile if Tinubu became President. “I pleaded with him that he would have a change of heart because we would all remain in Nigeria and work together to achieve the peaceful and prosperous Nigeria that was our collective dream,” he said.

On the memoir, Tinubu said it chronicles George’s formative years in Lagos, military career, tenure as Military Governor of old Ondo State, leadership at the Nigerian Ports Authority, and political involvement. He expressed confidence the book would provide important lessons on leadership, public service, politics, and military doctrine.
The President urged Nigerians to  acquire copies for personal and public use, while wishing George continued health, strength, and many years of service to God and humanity.
