President Bola Tinubu has expressed profound grief over the death of Yakubu Mohammed, the veteran journalist and co-founder of Newswatch magazine, who passed away on Monday night.
In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu extended heartfelt condolences to Mohammed’s family, the government and people of Kogi State, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), the Nigerian Guild of Editors, the Commonwealth Journalists’ Association, and other media bodies where the late journalist provided leadership.
He noted that Mohammed, alongside the late Dele Giwa, Dan Agbese and Ray Ekpu, launched Newswatch magazine in 1984, igniting an era of bold investigative journalism amid Nigeria’s military regime. His over 50-year career exemplified nation-building through fearless reporting, often risking his life to hold power accountable.

Tinubu, describing Mohammed as a personal friend, praised his resolve in upholding Newswatch’s legacy after Giwa’s assassination in 1986. The President highlighted Mohammed’s November 2025 memoir, Beyond Expectations, as a poignant call for reflection on Nigerian leadership and journalism’s pivotal role.
Before Newswatch, Mohammed served as associate editor of New Nigerian Newspapers (1976–1980), and later as deputy editor and editor of National Concord (1980–1984). He also chaired the governing council of Ahmadu Bello University as pro-chancellor.
Tinubu prayed for Allah to grant Mohammed’s soul Jannatul Firdaus.
