Former Lagos State governor and the All Progressives Congress (APC), National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari and Nigerians over the release of more of the abducted Chibok schoolgirls.
In a statement by Tinubu Media Office, Lagos, yesterday, he said: “The release of 82 Chibok schoolgirls demonstrates President Buhari’s unwavering commitment to freeing these and other innocent children from the cruel hand of Boko Haram and returning them to their families.
“I congratulate our gallant armed forces. After waiting so long for the return of their children, the parents of these girls must feel a great sense of relief and elation.
“The released children need to be nurtured and cared for in a special way to overcome the sad experience they suffered. Our government must help their families do this.
Meanwhile, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), welcomed the release of the schoolgirls, promising to provide emergency reproductive health care, psychosocial counselling and other critical supports to the girls.
The UN agency in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, provided support for women and girls who are survivors of sexual and Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
Since the insurgency in the North-East, six in 10 girls were reported to have experienced a form of gender-based violence and many of the victims have limited access to sexual and reproductive health care.
According to a statement by UNPFA Nigeria Country Office, Communications Officer, Lolade Johnson, for the rescued girls, an emergency team of psychosocial counsellors and health professionals was deployed to assist with the profiling of the girls, so their critical needs could be met.
