Online video-sharing social networking service TikTok has officially suspended service in the United States.
The suspension comes after TikTok’s Chinese parent ByteDance was mandated by a court order to sell ownership of the popular platform before January 19, 2025.
Unfortunately, ByteDance refused to sell and as of Sunday, January 19, 2025, the app has shut down for all US users.
Those who have opened the app in the US are greeted with a message that reads: “A law banning TikTok has been enacted in the U.S. Unfortunately, that means you can’t use TikTok for now.
“We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to reinstate TikTok once he takes office. Please stay tuned!”
Trump reveals 90-day reprieve
Speaking in a recent interview with NBC, US President-elect Donald Trump disclosed that he is willing to work with ByteDance to bring TikTok back.
He further hinted that he would give the platform 90 more days to work something out.
“I think that would be, certainly, an option that we look at. The 90-day extension is something that will be most likely done because it’s appropriate.
“You know, it’s appropriate. We have to look at it carefully. It’s a very big situation,” Trump said.
