Golf legend Tiger Woods has announced he is “stepping away” from the sport to prioritise his health following his arrest last week in Florida for driving under the influence (DUI).

The 50-year-old superstar crashed his SUV into a trailer being towed by a pickup truck near his Jupiter Island residence last Friday. According to authorities, Woods was assessed to be impaired at the scene and had opioid painkillers in his possession. He has pleaded not guilty to the DUI charges, explaining that he was checking his phone and changing radio stations at the time of the accident.

“I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today,” Woods said in a statement on Tuesday. “I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritise my well-being and work toward lasting recovery.”

During the crash, Woods’ vehicle rolled onto its side, forcing him to exit through the passenger door. Neither he nor the truck driver sustained injuries. He was charged with misdemeanor DUI with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test, as he declined a urine test after a breathalyser showed no alcohol in his system. Woods posted bond and was released from Martin County jail and has demanded a jury trial in Martin Circuit Court.

The accident report described Woods as “sweating profusely” with movements that were “lethargic and slow,” noting his eyes were “bloodshot and glassy” and he was “limping and stumbling to the right” while walking. Officers also found two hydrocodone pills in his possession.

Woods explained that his medical history, including seven back surgeries and over 20 operations on his leg, affects his mobility. He suffered multiple compound fractures and a shattered ankle in a 2021 California crash, but returned to compete at the 2022 Masters, finishing 47th despite limited mobility.

Woods has not participated in a major tournament since the 2024 British Open, having endured a ruptured left Achilles tendon in March 2025 and a back surgery last October. Last week, he appeared at a TGL simulator indoor golf event and discussed a potential return at the Masters.

“I’m committed to taking the time needed to return in a healthier, stronger, and more focused place, both personally and professionally,” Woods said. “I appreciate your understanding and support, and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones, and myself at this time.”

The golfing community now watches closely as Woods prioritises recovery, ahead of the upcoming Champions Dinner at Augusta National and the 90th Masters.
