Former Vice President and Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 general election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has asserted that the book, “The Making of Modern Nigeria – From Pre-Colonial Era Till Date,” published by The Sun Publishing Limited, will fill the void created by non-teaching of History in school.

Speaking in Abuja when he received a copy of the book from Mr. Onuoha Ukeh, Managing Director/Editor-In-Chief, The Sun Publishing Limited, Atiku said the book was a good attempt at addressing many historical issues, adding that schools and the future generations will find it useful.

The Sun book is scheduled for public presentation on September 21, 2023 at the Shehu Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja at 11am. Former Head of State of Nigeria, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, will be Chairman of the occasion.

Atiku said: “I welcome you to my house. I want to express my gratitude for this honour. The history of Nigeria has been a topical issue and a challenging one.

“In 2015, I met the then Minister of Education about the non-teaching of history in our schools. I told him it was leaving more Nigerians ignorant. His reply then was that they were trying to put a team together to put out an acceptable history about Nigeria.

“History is a controversial issue. But ours shouldn’t be because each state determines its own curriculum.

“I want to commend The Sun Publishing Limited for embarking on this journey and I hope it will enrich our students and those who are not in school yet.

“I want to believe that a majority of Nigerians are very ignorant. This is because we’ve not been teaching history in school. This book is a very good attempt to fill the vacuum created since the Civil War. I commend you and I look forward to attending the launch.”

Earlier in his remarks, Mr. Ukeh told the former Vice president that his presence at the official launch of the book will make a big difference as he has been part of the country’s history.

He said: “We are here to inform that our book is ready. Having occupied a top position in government as vi e president and being part of the development of the country, we felt we should present a copy to you ahead of the publuc presentation. We want to also invite you to the event.”

“The Making of Modern Nigeria – From Pre-colonial Era Till Date is a 322-page book with six sections.
