Tension in Imo PDP over Owerri zone senatorial primaries

There’s palpable tension in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of Imo East (Owerri zone) senatorial primaries, as one of the prominent aspirants in the race, Hon Greg Egu, has vowed that he will not accept the imposition of a candidate as witnessed during the Aboh Mbaise/Ngor Okpala federal constituency primaries, held at Umuneke Ngor headquarters, last Sunday.

Egu, who represented the Aboh Mbaise/Ngor Okpala federal constituency between 1999/ 2003, and a founding member of the PDP accused Senator Samuel Anyanwu, who is aspiring to be the party’s governorship candidate of trying to impose somebody from Mbaitoli/ Ikeduru federal constituency, where he comes from as the senatorial candidate for Imo East, when he knows it is the turn of the Ngor Okpala political bloc to produce the senatorial candidate for Imo East (Owerri zone).

Addressing a press conference at his country home in Umuohiagu, Ngor Okpala, on Sunday, the senatorial aspirant noted that the PDP said the primaries would be by consensus.

Egu said: “I am running against Prince Eze Madumere and one other young man who I don’t know. They said that it is going to be a consensus. I have campaigned before all the stakeholders in the party. SamDaddy (Senator Samuel Anyanwu) will have to be careful what he does at the primaries. I have seen all the leaders that count in the entire Owerri zone because it is the turn of the Ngor Okpala political bloc to produce the next senator for the Owerri zone.

“What happened today (Sunday) at Umuneke Ngor, in the House of Reps for Aboh Mbaise/Ngor Okpala federal constituency primaries shouldn’t happen on Wednesday, where somebody came from nowhere and declared somebody a winner and then disappeared. I will be there on Wednesday to know what they are going to do. They said it is going to be a consensus. I have campaigned before all the stakeholders in the Owerri zone and have also seen all the leaders that count.

“We are talking about equity and fairness; equity should not only be observed at the state level, it must go down to all levels. Ngor Okpala has not produced a senator for the zone since 1979. The party should not make the mistake that the APC is trying to make, by planning to give the Owerri senatorial ticket to a person from Owerri North state constituency, when the incumbent Senator Onyewuchi Ezenwa is also from the same Owerri North. That cannot work.

“If Samuel Anyanwu ( SamDaddy) wants to be a governor he can’t expect a senator to also come from his federal constituency ( Mbaitoli/ Ikeduru)”.

Egu insisted that the only way to avoid a crisis in the state party, ahead of the general elections next year, is to do the right thing.
