Telecoms tariff hike: SERAP issues ultimatum to FG, threatens legal action

Telecoms tariff hike

By John Ogunsemore

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has threatened to drag the Federal Government to court to force a reversal of the recent 50% hike in telecommunications tariffs.

The group made this known in a post on Facebook on Tuesday.

On Monday, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) approved a 50% hike in the cost of data and calls following requests from major operators for higher tariffs, with MTN Nigeria initially seeking a 100% hike.

The NCC said the hike would take effect in February 2025.

SERAP described the hike as unlawful and promised to challenge it in court if not reversed within 48 hours.

The group said, “The Tinubu administration and telcos must immediately reverse the unlawful increase in calls and data costs.

“We’ll see in court if the 50% tariff hike is not reversed within 48 hours.”
