The National Sports Commission (NSC) has expressed confidence in Team Nigeria’s athletics squad following the invitation of 29 athletes by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) as preparations intensify for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
The athletes have joined representatives from other sports at the national camp in Abuja, where they will continue preparations before departing for a three-week high-performance training camp in Aberdeen, Scotland, scheduled to commence on July 2.
The athletics squad is headlined by world-renowned sprint hurdler and two-time Commonwealth Games champion, Tobi Amusan, whose experience is expected to provide leadership as Nigeria targets a successful outing in Glasgow.
Also named in the squad are some of the country’s leading track and field athletes, including Kayinsola Ajayi, Favour Ashe, Ese Brume and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, alongside a mix of seasoned internationals and promising young talents competing in the sprints, relays, jumps and throwing events.

Director General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, described the composition of the team as a reflection of Nigeria’s ambition to compete strongly for medals at the Games.
According to Olopade, the selected athletes have consistently demonstrated the quality and competitiveness required to excel on the international stage, expressing confidence that the ongoing preparations will further enhance their readiness.
The Commission noted that the Abuja camp is designed to provide the athletes with the technical, medical and logistical support needed ahead of the final phase of preparations in Scotland.
