“Tayo Conga: Beating the heartbeat of Africa to the world”

Oluwatayo Oluwadamilare Ajayi, better known by his stage name Tayo Conga, has carved a niche for himself as one of Nigeria’s most vibrant cultural ambassadors.

With over a decade of dedication to African arts, culture, and tourism, he has turned the drum—especially the conga, into both a personal voice and a universal language. For him, percussion is not merely music; it is the heartbeat of Africa, a rhythm that tells stories, connects generations, and inspires unity.

Born and raised in Ikogosi, Ekiti State, a town famous for its warm springs and natural beauty, Tayo’s environment naturally immersed him in the rhythm of nature. From the flow of water to the cycle of the seasons, he began to see life itself as music. “Life is full of rhythm,” he reflects. “The movement of day and night, the sun, stars, moon, and seasons, all of these inspire joy when it’s their time to shine. The conga drum became my voice to tell African stories.” This philosophy continues to guide his artistry, allowing him to bridge spirituality, culture, and creativity through percussion.

As the lead percussionist of Tumbadora African Entertainment, Tayo Conga has represented African culture on some of the world’s most prestigious stages. He has performed at major events such as the African Drum Festival, International Jazz Festival, and the Forbes Under 30 Summit Africa, each appearance reinforcing his reputation as a global cultural advocate. His rhythms have also reached diplomatic circles, where he has performed before dignitaries and diplomats from the United States, Brazil, Netherlands, and Spain. These experiences have expanded his mission: to share the power of African percussion with audiences far beyond the continent.

Tayo’s work is not limited to the stage. He is passionate about education and cultural preservation, conducting workshops on African percussion that introduce new generations to its history, techniques, and meaning. Through the African Heritage Tour series, he curates unforgettable experiences at Nigeria’s most iconic cultural and historical landmarks, such as the Ikogosi Warm Spring and the Badagry Slave Trade Zone, reminding participants of Africa’s deep cultural roots and resilience.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions, 2025 became a landmark year for Tayo Conga and the Tumbadora African Crew, when they were officially invited to perform at the Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX) during the Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF) in Algiers, Algeria. This prestigious platform, which unites Africa’s leading creatives, further cemented his status as a leading voice in the continent’s cultural renaissance.

Tayo is also a visionary organizer. He is the Convener of the “Spirit of Drums” concert and the “Gathering of Arts and Sound” showcase, two unique platforms that celebrate African percussion and creativity while promoting cultural exchange. His initiatives provide artists with opportunities to perform, collaborate, and innovate, ensuring that African heritage is not only preserved but continually reimagined. He also runs the Tayo Conga Drum Workshop and hosts a quarterly cultural show, staged primarily at the Nike Art Gallery in Lekki, Lagos. These gatherings have become melting pots of art, music, and cultural expression, drawing enthusiasts from all walks of life.

Despite his international recognition, Tayo remains deeply connected to his community. He currently serves as the Chief Percussionist in the music department of Elevation Church, Lagos, where his rhythms uplift worship and inspire congregants. In this role, he demonstrates how percussion can transcend entertainment to become a spiritual and emotional experience.

Tayo draws inspiration from great African musicians and cultural icons. Among his role models is Wole Oni, a renowned keyboardist, percussionist, and Yamaha ambassador, whose work embodies the fusion of artistry and cultural advocacy. Like his mentors, Tayo aspires not just to entertain but to leave a lasting impact on audiences, communities, and future generations.

His advice to aspiring percussionists is rooted in faith and authenticity. “Believe in God, trust in Him, and stay true to your roots. Be consistent in practice, and use your talent not just to entertain, but to serve, preserve culture, and inspire the world.”

For Tayo Conga, the drum is more than an instrument, it is a symbol of identity, a bridge across cultures, and a vessel of Africa’s timeless heartbeat. Through his rhythms, he continues to connect the past with the present, while charting a path for the future of African arts on the global stage.
