Executive Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), Zacch Adedeji, has urged all sub-national tax authorities to embrace technology integration in revenue systems to boost efficiency.

Adedeji spoke as special guest of honour at the Federal Capital Territory Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS) Stakeholder Engagement Forum, themed, “Harmonising Revenue Systems and Implementing New Tax Laws,” yesterday in Abuja.

Represented by the Executive Secretary of the Joint Revenue Board, Olusegun Adesokan, he highlighted technology’s pivotal role in the new tax laws. “Integration of technology in revenue systems is critical and should be embraced by all the tax authorities at the sub-national level,” Adedeji said through his representative.

He commended the FCT-IRS for convening the high-level forum to align with Nigeria’s fiscal reforms, describing it as both essential and timely. The reforms, he noted, aim to redefine compliance, curb revenue leakages and build a transparent tax ecosystem to drive infrastructure and economic growth in the FCT.

He highlighted President Bola Tinubu’s far-reaching fiscal reforms, designed to reposition Nigeria’s revenue architecture for efficiency, equity and sustainable public finance.

Acting Executive Chairman of FCT-IRS, Michael Ango, positioned the forum as a ‘transformative initiative’ for stakeholder partnerships. “This stakeholder engagement forum is one with a difference. We have not called you here today to educate you on your obligations or to tell you how much taxes we have collected. Rather, we have called you here to discuss our vision for the FCT and how we can work together as partners to achieve that vision,” Ango stated.

He linked economic growth to community-level productivity and tax contributions, vowing to elevate FCT-IRS to global standards. Ango praised the FCT minister’s unprecedented infrastructure and security gains in the last two years, fuelled by internally generated revenue.

“These developments do not occur by accident but by deliberate design through internally generated revenue. The fundamental purpose of taxation is to fund essential services, drive infrastructure development and create a self-reinforcing cycle of economic growth and civic responsibility,” he added.

He noted that as a Joint Revenue Board member, FCT-IRS now accesses national tax systems for better digital and institutional leverage. Ango reaffirmed a people-centred approach, prioritising voluntary compliance over enforcement.

Director of Taxpayers Services, Chinwe Ndu, welcomed participants, calling the forum key to shared understanding of new tax laws, voluntary compliance and business ease. “Tax thrives on collaboration rather than confusion. Our goal is to craft and implement a tax framework that is both pragmatic and practicable,” she said.
