Tanker explosion kills 3 in Rivers

From TONY JOHN, Port Harcourt

Three persons reportedly list their lives on Tuesday, in fire outbreak that occurred from an explosion by a tanker-laden with gas.

The incident occurred at Obiri Ikwerre Flyover, Port Harcourt, the State capital.

State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Grace Iringe-Koko a Superintendent of Police (SP), confirmed this to journalists.

She said the Commissioner of Police, CP Olatunji Disu and other men of the command had visited the scene to ensure that the fire did not escalate.

The PPRO, however, urged the motorists and commuters to use alternative route and avoid the area due to the presence of the cylinders with contents still inside pending when it would be evacuated.

It was gathered that the tanker lost control as the driver tried to navigate the Obiri Ikwerre flyover.

An eyewitness said the tanker was carrying Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), which fell over and exploded, razing some vehicles and valuables.

It was gathered that security agents and fire fighters were still at the scene trying to contain the fire.
