Seven-Up Bottling Company’s (SBC) 2025 Sustainability Week delivered a major environmental win as the company, working with key partners, recovered 2.5 million tonnes of plastic waste through its Plastic for Product (P4P) Community Activation in Apapa-Iganmu LCDA, Lagos. More than 400 community members took part in the exercise, held at the Oba’s Palace in Ijora Kingdom, with participation from Apapa/Iganmu LCDA, the Food and Beverage Recycling Alliance (FBRA), the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Sonnex, and the Recyclers Association of Nigeria.
Guided by the theme, “Impacting Positively on People, Planet and Profit,” the 2025 Sustainability Week featured activities across all SBC regional plants nationwide, including the Plastic for Waste initiative, Green Skills Bootcamp, and advocacy visits to traditional rulers and local leaders.
During the activation, Nkemdirim Agboti, Head of Legal and Corporate Affairs at SBC, highlighted the company’s enduring relationship with the Ijora community and reaffirmed its commitment to shared development. She said, “Ijora will always be home for Seven-Up Bottling Company, and we remain committed to growing and building with this community.” Agboti also conveyed SBC’s gratitude to the Ojora of Ijora and Iganmu Kingdom, Oba Abdulfatai Aremu Aromire, who attended the event, as well as the Executive Chairman of Apapa-Iganmu LCDA, Mr. Jimoh Olawale Saliu, for their consistent support.
Mr. Saliu commended SBC’s sustainability efforts, stressing that community-led programmes like the P4P initiative play a critical role in addressing Lagos’ escalating waste management challenges.
Also speaking, Lovelyn Okoye, SBC’s Head of Sustainability, explained that the company’s Circular Economy and Community Empowerment pillars form the backbone of the Plastic Waste Take-Back Initiative. She underscored the importance of public participation in driving sustainable plastic recovery and advancing Nigeria’s broader circular economy vision. Okoye further noted that the initiative is being carried out across all SBC regional plants as part of this year’s Sustainability Week. She praised the LCDA Chairman for ensuring active participation from the specially-abled community, describing it as a strong demonstration of the LCDA’s commitment to inclusion.
The Plastic for Product campaign, running from November 17 to 21, 2025, is one of the highlights of this year’s Sustainability Week. It encourages residents to exchange recyclable plastics for essential household items, fostering shared responsibility for a cleaner, more sustainable environment.
Yejide Abifarin, Sustainability Manager at the Food and Beverage Recycling Alliance, added that all collected plastic containers can be recycled or upcycled. She explained that the initiative not only helps prevent waste from clogging drains and canals but also strengthens Extended Producer Responsibility compliance and reduces Nigeria’s reliance on virgin PET resin, ensuring mutual benefits across the value chain.
