Suspected cultists, over the weekend, struck in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, killing a one Enok Saviour, a 23-year-old cadet of the Nigeria Defence Academy (NDA).
According to investigations, the deceased had come for holidays when cultists, who went on rampage in the area, attacked a resident prompting the deceased to chase after them.
Sources said Enok, who was very popular in the area, was chatting with a naval rating when they heard the screams of a victim whose bag was snatched by a group of cultists.
It was gathered that Enok immediately went after the cultists but unknown to him, some members of the gang were within the area and they shot him at close range.
“Immediately they shot him, they all disappeared amidst pandemonium created. The Naval rating also escaped due to being made second target by the armed cultists” a resident of the area said.
Enok’s shooting, Daily Sun gathered, triggered a protest march, on Monday, by women and youths of Ovom, where he resided, calling on the state Police Command to rid the area of criminal elements.
The aggrieved women and youths took to the streets and called on the Nigerian Police and the state government to save them from incessant cases of violent attacks, rape, armed robbery and killings by young boys suspected to be members of dangerous cult groups in the state capital.
The leadership of the community, in an emergency meeting, have resolved to work with the Nigeria Police to ensure the arrest and prosecution of the killers.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Asinim Butwats, who confirmed the incident said the police had swung into action.
“Yes the Police have been briefed over the incident and our men have swung into action. The Police is happy that the people in Ovom are ready to cooperate with the Police. The gang members have been identified and the Police have launched a manhunt for them.”
