‘Support govt to extinguish corruption’

Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, has appealed to the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), to support the Federal Government in extinguishing corruption in Nigeria.
He said in a statement yesterday that, in spite of enormous human and natural resources in Nigeria, the country was still struggling to meet the basic social services requirement of the citizens, attributing it to corruption, which he said had eaten deep into the system.
Adamu, who hosted ICAN officials, led by its president, Alhaji Ismaila Zakari, in his office in Abuja, appreciated their contributions to the development of Nigeria’s education system, particularly in promoting accounting education.
He encouraged them to identify areas of improvement, particularly in entrenching the ethics of transparency and accountability in the profession.
The minister informed them about the commitment of government to improve the education system as evident in the increased budgetary allocation in the last two years.
He said: “Besides the annual budgetary allocation, government also uses the platform of intervention funds such as the Universal Basic Education Commission, Tertiary Education Trust Fund and NEEDS Assessment, to complement infrastructural development in the sector.”
Zakari said the visit was to consolidate and strengthen the cordial relationship between the ministry and ICAN.
