Charles Bassey, a key member of Nigeria’s 1980 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON)-winning Green Eagles squad, has passed away at the age of 71.

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) confirmed his death on Sunday, stating that Bassey died on Saturday, April 12, in Eket, Akwa Ibom State, after a prolonged illness.

A former attacker for Calabar Rovers, Bassey contributed significantly to Nigeria’s first AFCON title in 1980. Beyond his playing career, he coached several Nigerian clubs, including Akwa United, Wikki Tourists, BCC Lions, Flash Flamingos, and Mobil Pegasus. His death, hours after that of teammate Christian Chukwu, marks a somber moment for Nigerian football.

Akwa United mourned Bassey’s loss, describing him as a “legend and coach” whose legacy endures. The NFF extended condolences to his family and the football community, noting his impact both on and off the pitch.
