Sunshine, storms ahead as NiMet issues 3-day weather outlook

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted a mix of sunshine and cloudiness from Sunday to Tuesday across the country, with thunderstorms expected in several states.

The latest weather outlook released by NiMet in Abuja indicates predominantly sunny skies over the northern region throughout the forecast period from Sunday to Tuesday this week.

In the North Central region, sunny conditions with patches of clouds are expected, alongside isolated thunderstorms with or without rain in parts of Kogi, Niger, the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, and Kwara states.

For the southern region, cloudy conditions with intervals of sunshine are anticipated, with prospects of isolated thunderstorms accompanied by light rain over parts of Lagos, Ondo, Ogun, Delta, and Cross River states during the morning hours.

Later in the day, moderate thunderstorms are expected to affect Ondo, Ogun, Ekiti, Osun, Edo, Imo, Enugu, Abia, Anambra, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Delta states.

On Monday, NiMet forecasts continued sunny skies across the northern region, with possible isolated thunderstorms over parts of southern Taraba State.

The North Central region will experience sunny skies with patches of clouds, while light thunderstorms are expected in parts of Kogi and Nasarawa in the morning, and moderate rainfall in Benue later in the day.

In the southern region, cloudy conditions with sunshine intervals will persist, with light morning thunderstorms expected in Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Ondo, Delta, Lagos, Ogun, Edo, and Cross River states.

By afternoon and evening, moderate thunderstorms are likely across Lagos, Ondo, Ogun, Ekiti, Osun, Oyo, Imo, Enugu, Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Edo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Delta states.

By Tuesday, sunny skies are expected to continue in the northern region.

The North Central region will see patches of clouds in the morning, followed by isolated thunderstorms with light rain over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau, and Niger states later in the day.

The southern region will maintain cloudy conditions with intervals of sunshine, with light morning thunderstorms expected in Lagos, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, and Cross River states. Moderate thunderstorms are anticipated later in Ondo, Edo, Imo, Bayelsa, and Delta states.

NiMet warned that strong winds may precede thunderstorms and advised the public to take necessary precautions. Residents are urged to secure loose objects, avoid driving during heavy rainfall, disconnect electrical appliances, and stay away from tall trees.

The agency also cautioned that high temperatures may cause thermal discomfort, advising Nigerians to wear breathable clothing, stay in well-ventilated areas, and remain hydrated.

Airline operators were advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for effective planning, while the general public is encouraged to stay updated through the agency’s official channels.
