Chelsea have suffered an early setback in their pursuit of Granit Xhaka after Sunderland rejected an initial £8 million offer for the experienced midfielder, insisting their captain is not available for transfer at any price.

The Premier League newcomers reportedly dismissed the proposal as “insulting”, making it clear they have no intention of negotiating with Chelsea or any other club over the Switzerland international.

Chelsea’s interest in Xhaka is believed to have been driven by new manager Xabi Alonso, who enjoyed a successful spell alongside the midfielder at Bayer Leverkusen. The pair helped Leverkusen win their first-ever Bundesliga title before Alonso’s move to Stamford Bridge.

Xhaka joined Sunderland from Bayer Leverkusen last summer in a deal worth up to £17 million and was immediately handed the captain’s armband. The 33-year-old played a key role in guiding the Black Cats to an unexpected seventh-place finish in the Premier League and qualification for the UEFA Europa League.

Despite Chelsea’s desire to add experienced Premier League players to complement their youthful squad, Sunderland remain determined to keep one of their most influential players. Xhaka is contracted until 2028, strengthening the club’s position in resisting interest.

Although Chelsea considered their offer reasonable given the midfielder’s age he turns 34 in September Sunderland believe the bid falls far below his value, particularly after his leadership role in the club’s impressive campaign.

The transfer speculation has also sparked frustration among Sunderland supporters, many of whom pointed to Xhaka’s emotional message at the end of last season. Addressing fans after securing European qualification, the captain declared that the club’s achievements were “just the beginning” and promised greater success in the years ahead.

Xhaka is currently away with Switzerland at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he has played every minute of his country’s campaign. He has scored once during the tournament and is expected to lead Switzerland into their Round of 32 clash against Algeria.

With Sunderland refusing to entertain negotiations, Chelsea will now have to decide whether to abandon their pursuit or return with a significantly improved offer for one of Alonso’s most trusted former players.
