In a divergence of declarations, the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, has announced Wednesday, April 10, as the day of Eid-Fitr in Nigeria. This decision follows the affirmation from the National Moon Sighting Committees across the country, indicating no sighting of the new moon.
A statement issued by the Chairman, Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs to the Sultanate Council, Prof Sambo Junaidu, confirmed the acceptance of the report, declaring Wednesday, April 10, 2024, as the first day of Shawwal 1445AH.
However, Saudi Arabia’s announcement on Monday revealed a contrasting viewpoint. The Kingdom reported the non-sighting of the crescent of Shawwal, signaling the continuation of fasting on Tuesday, with Eid-El-Fitr to be celebrated on Wednesday, April 10, 2024.
The discrepancy stems from differences in moon sighting methodologies and geographical locations. While the Sultanate Council relied on local reports, Saudi Arabia’s decision is based on its own observations.
This variance highlights the complexities in determining significant Islamic dates and events, often leading to differing outcomes in different regions.
Muslims are advised to adhere to the directives of their local religious authorities regarding the observation of Eid-Fitr, considering the variations in moon sighting practices.
