The Director General of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Mallam Farouk Salim, yesterday, disclosed that arrangements were being made for the return of the agency to the borders.
This, he said, was part of the efforts being made to ensure that fake and substandard products would no longer have access into the country through the various land borders.
Salim disclosed this in Awka, Anambra State capital, during the organisation’s stakeholders’ forum themed: Building Confidence, Value in Local Products via Standardisation.
The DG who was represented by his Senior Special Assistant, Chief Duru Emeka, said that SON had stepped up fight against substandard products, saying that already, some violators of the country’s relevant laws and regulations in that regard have been caught.
“We have many on our list. I cannot give you a specific number now but I can assure you that SON is doing everything in its powers and within the law to ensure that those that want to violate the rule or the guidelines in doing their businesses face the law.
“SON has not been at the borders for some time now but the federal government is changing that policy. SON is gradually moving back to the border. I am sure that once we get there, and we start checking the containers at the port of entry, most of these product will reduce”, he said.
Salim said that the forum was aimed at “sensitising the stakeholders on the need to preserve standards in whatever they’re doing; whether they’re manufacturing or they’re importing or exporting or whatever system they’re operating on.”
