The Okun Development Association (ODA) in Kogi State has called on Nigerians and political stakeholders to exercise restraint in their calls for the sack of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN).
The association, which warned against escalating political rhetoric around the electoral body, urged that grievances and concerns be addressed strictly through constitutional and legal channels, rather than through inflammatory public statements.
In a statement by its President General, Chief Akenson Rotimi, ODA described the office of the INEC chairman as a sensitive national institution that must be shielded from undue political pressure and public incitement.
It noted that while public scrutiny of electoral officials is a normal feature of democracy, such scrutiny must be conducted responsibly and within the bounds of Nigeria’s constitutional order. “We respectfully remind all stakeholders that Nigeria’s constitutional framework provides established mechanisms for resolving disputes.”
The association also enjoined aggrieved persons to avoid calls that could undermine institutional stability.
ODA specifically appealed for calm in the face of increasing demands for the removal of Amupitan, describing such agitation as capable of distracting the electoral commission at a critical moment in Nigeria’s democratic process.
According to the association, Nigeria’s democracy would be better strengthened by constructive engagement rather than politically charged campaigns against individuals occupying sensitive public offices.

The group also expressed confidence in the leadership capacity of Amupitan. It described him as a man of integrity, discipline and institutional respect, whose record in academia and public service demonstrates the temperament required for national responsibility.
It said his appointment by President Bola Tinubu reflected merit and competence, and should be allowed to stand without unnecessary political interference.
ODA further urged political actors, commentators and citizens to grant the INEC leadership calm and institutional space to carry out its constitutional mandate without fear or favour.
“The office of the INEC Chairman will always attract scrutiny, but such scrutiny must not degenerate into calls that threaten institutional stability,” the association cautioned.
Reaffirming its commitment to national unity and democratic stability, the ODA called for responsible civic engagement and urged Nigerians to prioritise the credibility of electoral institutions over partisan considerations.
The association, which also appealed for prayers and goodwill for Amupitan, was optimistic that his tenure would strengthen public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process.
