As the Director of Research at the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, Prof. Stella Smith stands tall among Nigeria’s foremost scientists and public service icons.

She is celebrated for her groundbreaking contributions to medical research, public health, and scientific innovation.

With a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology from the University of Ilorin, a Master’s degree in Medical Microbiology and Parasitology, a Distinction in academic laurel from the College of Medicine, University of Lagos and Ph.D. in Medical Microbiology, she was well honed for her area of specialisation.

Since 1988 when she joined the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, Prof. Stella Smith has proved her worth, rising through the ranks to become the Director of Research.  She also serves as a Professor of Microbiology at Mountain Top University in Ogun State.

Her pioneering research in molecular epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance, particularly on Helicobacter pylori and other infectious agents, has placed her at the forefront of global medical research.

Through her leadership, the Nigeria Institute of Medical Research’s Molecular Biology Division has become a hub for biomedical innovation, diagnostics, and research excellence.

Her work continues to strengthen Nigeria’s health research system and inspire future generations of scientists.

For her lifelong dedication to medical science, integrity in service, and transformative contributions to national development, The Sun Board of Editors chose her as winner of The Sun Public Service Award for 2025.
