Paul Ibe, media adviser and spokesman to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has described the push to establish state police ahead of the 2027 general election as politically motivated.
Ibe, who spoke during an interview on ARISE NEWS on Tuesday, said he supported the idea of state policing but questioned the timing of the proposed legislation.
According to him, the government should not use an election year to pursue a major security reform that could be influenced by political interests.

“What Atiku Abubakar will not do in an election year is to ramp up legislation for state police,” Ibe said.
“I said that the last time I was here. That’s political. We support state police, but not at this time. Whatever shape or form it takes now, it is political.”
He said the Federal Government should instead prioritise strengthening security in vulnerable communities and tackling recurring attacks across the country.
