State police: I won’t interfere even if my son commits offence — Adeleke

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has expressed support for the establishment of state police, promising not to interfere with its operations or shield anyone from facing the law.

Adeleke spoke on Tuesday at the ARISE Town Hall in Osogbo, where he said concerns that state governors could abuse the proposed system should not be used to discourage its establishment.

The governor said he believed in state police and recalled that he had advocated the idea while serving as a senator.

“When I was in the Senate, I was the one that introduced the State Police,” Adeleke said.

Addressing concerns over possible political interference, Adeleke said he would not use his position to influence the police or prevent anyone from being prosecuted for an offence.

“I have a fear of God. And I promise my God I will be fair to people,” he said.

Adeleke gave a personal example, saying even his son would be allowed to face the law if he committed an offence.

“If it is my son, because I trained him very well, that committed offence, you go and face the law. That is it. I’m not going to bend for anybody,” he said.

The governor said he believed in the rule of law and would ensure that the police operated effectively to protect lives and property.

“I believe in rule of law. I will not do that. So I will make sure our police, they function very well, so that they can come and do their job in protecting life and property,” Adeleke said.
