Governors under the platform Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), are moving forward with state police creation, preparing to send a key legislative bill to the National Assembly for approval.
Kwara State Governor and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, made this disclosure while speaking to President Bola Tinubu during governors’ visit to his Lagos residence.
He highlighted ongoing talks among top security players, coordinated by the National Security Adviser, with NGF contributions now baked into the draft framework.
“On the issue of state police, discussions are ongoing amongst various security organisations, led by the National Security Adviser and the NGF has made its contribution. That document will be taken to the National Assembly to see how we can have a legislative framework for state police,” he said.
AbdulRazaq framed the initiative as a vital step by states to bolster security systems amid growing nationwide threats. He reaffirmed governors’ dedication to partnering with security outfits to crush terrorism and enhance public safety.
“As governors, we commit to renew our collaboration with security forces to defeat terrorism, steady and expand infrastructure opportunities and improve outcomes of lives of our people,” he added.
The NGF chair urged an end to security lapses everywhere, underscoring the role of unified leadership efforts.
“Together, we must see that breaches of security all over the country come to an end,” he said.

The Lagos trip also allowed governors to extend post-Ramadan greetings to Tinubu and praise his stewardship, including his landmark UK state visit—the first in 37 years.
“On behalf of my colleagues governors, we bring Your Excellency season’s greetings from the people of our various states. We thank Almighty God for His mercies that saw us through the month of Ramadan,” AbdulRazaq said.
He hailed the UK trip for revitalizing ties and boosting prosperity prospects.
“While our nation has always enjoyed good relationship with the United Kingdom, the state visit was the first in 37 years. This is bold and significant. It speaks to new leadership lease in Nigeria and we thank you and congratulate you for that, sir,” he said.
AbdulRazaq lauded Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for fostering national pride and involvement, linking it to better security.
“Your Excellency, we thank you for prosecuting the Renewed Hope Agenda in a way that has made Nigerians proud more than ever before. Every Nigerian now has a stake in the nation building. We believe that this will translate to improved security in every part of our country,” he said.
He appealed for unity, compassion, and understanding among Nigerians to secure peace and growth, noting nearly 25 governors showed up on short notice as a nod to Tinubu’s respected guidance.
“As you can see here today, we have about 25 governors who, at short notice, it’s the respect we have for you and the leadership you’re providing for the nation,” he said.
