Stakeholders have tasked the Directorate of Legal Services of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), to embrace technology to improve efficiency and effectiveness in the public sector legal framework.
A legal practitioners and right activist, Malachy Ugwumadu, during his keynote address at a two-day retreat organized by the NDDC Directorate of Legal Services (DLS) in Lagos, said the importance of integrating technology into the NDDC’s operations to achieve greater efficiency was apt.
The retreat focused on enhancing the operational efficiency of legal services and developing an implementation plan for existing policies, regulations, guidelines, and frameworks within the commission.
Ugwumadu highlighted the need for the procurement of modern infrastructure and technology to streamline operations, improve productivity, and speed up output.
“If you remain analogue while the world moves towards technological evolution, you risk falling behind. This is crucial even for oil companies and their operations, as technology is key to being properly equipped and efficient”.
He said that the DLS plays a crucial role in providing legal advice and support within the organization, particularly when it comes to the use of technology. ..
“Assessing new technologies for legal compliance with relevant laws and regulations, such as data protection, intellectual property rights, and cybersecurity laws”.
He added that providing training to employees on legal issues related to technology, including compliance with data protection laws and ethical use of technology would enhance their service delivery.
Moreover,he supported the implementation of innovative technologies by advocating legal basis and addressing any potential legal concerns proactively.
In his opening remarks, Stephen Onome Ighomuaye, Director of the DLS, noted that the retreat underscored the directorate’s commitment to training and skill development.
“This retreat is part of our effort to drive diligent corporate governance and optimal service delivery, ensuring that the directorate fulfills its mandate and contributes to the NDDC’s interventionist agenda to benefit the people and communities across the Niger Delta”.
Adebomi Adekeye who presented a paper on “Driving Legal Service Efficiency and Excellence through Technology and Innovation,” emphasized that without embracing technology, the NDDC risks inefficiencies, delays in project execution, and a loss of stakeholder trust.
“On the other hand, a tech-driven legal team positions the NDDC as an innovative organization capable of addressing contemporary challenges. As the Niger Delta strives for sustainable development, technology plays a pivotal role in transformation.By integrating technology into operations, legal officers can ensure compliance, uphold governance standards, and foster socio-economic growth across the region.”
