The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Lagos State University (LASU) chapter, has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Lagos State Government and the university management to address its demands or face industrial action.

The ultimatum was issued at an emergency congress convened to deliberate on what the union described as critical and existential issues affecting the welfare and rights of its members.

In a communiqué signed by the branch Chairman, Demu Bankole, and the Assistant Secretary, Olumayowa Okunbo, the union warned that it remained resolute, united and unwavering in defending the rights and welfare of its members.

The communiqué stated: “Be it known to the university management and the Lagos State Government that the Congress has resolved to grant a strict 14-day ultimatum from the date of this communiqué for the satisfactory resolution of all the aforementioned contentious issues.

“Take notice that failure to comply within this stipulated time frame will leave the Congress with no option but to reconvene and deploy all necessary, lawful and collective industrial actions to defend the rights and welfare of our members.”

Among its demands, SSANU called for the immediate and unconditional payment of the ₦50,000 relief fund announced by the Lagos State Government to cushion the impact of the prevailing economic hardship on workers.

The union also demanded the immediate payment of the outstanding 11 months’ salary arrears.

“We strongly condemn the government’s unjust and erroneous rejection of this legitimate entitlement, which constitutes an unlawful withholding of workers’ earned wages.”

The union also rejected the proposed reviewed Conditions of Service recently forwarded to the Governing Council by the university management. “This document was unilaterally formulated in blatant disregard of the principles of collective bargaining and without the mandatory input, consultation or concurrence of the recognised staff unions.”

The union further demanded the prompt domestication and implementation of the recently signed 2026 Federal Government/SSANU and NASU agreement, particularly the approved 35 per cent consolidated salary increase and all other ancillary benefits, without further delay or bureaucratic bottlenecks.

Other demands include the immediate release and implementation of the Governing Council’s final decision on the report of the ad hoc committee constituted to review the contentious 2024/2025 promotion exercise, in the interest of justice and fairness.

SSANU also demanded the immediate reversal of the appointment of academic staff as directors of two non-teaching directorates—the Directorate of Academic Planning and the Multi-Media Centre.

According to the union, “this action constitutes a gross violation of the extant Conditions of Service guiding senior non-academic staff of LASU and stands in direct contradiction to the spirit and letter of the recently concluded 2026 FGN-SSANU/NASU agreement.”

The union also resolved to dispatch a demand letter to the Governor of Lagos State, urging him to fulfil the promise of a 20 per cent salary increase made to all Lagos State workers during the 2023 governorship election campaign.
