Spain goalkeeper, Unai Simón has set a new FIFA World Cup record for the longest time played in finals matches without conceding a goal.
Guinness World Records confirmed on Facebook on Friday night that Simón played 649 minutes in World Cup finals matches without letting in a goal, breaking the 36-year-old record of 518 minutes held by Italy’s Walter Zenga since 1990.
The run finally came to an end when Spain conceded a goal in the ongoing World Cup quarterfinal clash against Belgium at the Los Angeles Stadium.
Zenga’s record, set during the 1990 World Cup in Italy, had stood as the benchmark for goalkeepers for more than three decades.
Simón’s streak underscores Spain’s defensive strength in recent tournaments and puts the Athletic Bilbao shot-stopper top of the World Cup clean sheet charts.
