Spain have been handed a timely boost ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, with teenage sensation Lamine Yamal expected to be fit for the country’s opening match against Cape Verde on June 15.
Head coach Luis de la Fuente confirmed on Sunday that Yamal, alongside fellow winger Nico Williams and Osasuna forward Victor Munoz, is progressing well in recovery and should be available for selection when the European champions begin their tournament in Atlanta.
The trio missed Spain’s trip to Mexico for Monday’s friendly against Peru, remaining instead at the team’s training base in the United States as they continue rehabilitation work.
“We regret that they are not here with us, but the medical and physical conditioning staff advised them to stay there,” De la Fuente said.

“All three should be available for the next match. They are progressing well in their recovery and are doing very well.”
Yamal and Athletic Bilbao star Williams were sidelined at the end of the club season due to hamstring injuries, raising concerns about their readiness for the World Cup. However, Spain’s coaching staff now appears confident that both players will return in time for the tournament opener.
The return of Yamal, widely regarded as one of football’s brightest young talents, is expected to strengthen Spain’s attack as the team targets another major international title following its European Championship triumph.
Spain will begin their World Cup campaign against debutants Cape Verde before facing Saudi Arabia in their second group-stage match. They will conclude the group phase with a clash against Uruguay in Guadalajara.
With key players nearing full fitness and expectations high, Spain remains among the leading contenders to challenge for the World Cup crown in Canada, Mexico and the United States.
