Spain closes airspace to US military flights over Iran war

Spain has shut its airspace to United States military aircraft involved in operations against Iran, in a move that underscores its strong opposition to the ongoing conflict.

Defence Minister Margarita Robles confirmed the decision, stating that neither the use of Spanish airspace and military bases for actions linked to the war are not authorised.

“The bases are not authorised, and of course neither is the use of Spanish airspace for actions related to the war in Iran,” Margarita Robles told journalists, confirming a report by El Pais daily.

The prohibition, which does not apply in emergency cases, complicates operations and logistics by requiring US military aircraft travelling to the Middle East to divert over Spain.

The action strengthens Madrid’s position against taking part in what it views as a unilateral conflict without international legal support, building on its earlier reluctance to let US military access to jointly maintained facilities.

One of the most outspoken Western critics of the conflict is Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who has called the US-Israeli strikes on Iran “illegal and reckless.”

Tensions between Spain and the US have reportedly increased as a result of the decision, with President Donald Trump allegedly threatening trade sanctions in retaliation for Madrid’s position.
