The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has reiterated its call on local manufacturers and importers to adhere to standards and quality assurance.
The Director General/Chief Executive Officer of SON, Farouk Salimat, made the call in a keynote address at a one-day sensitisation workshop organised for the stakeholders in the South-South geo-political zone in Asaba, Delta State capital, on the relevance of SON in facilitating trade and economy.
The DG, who was represented by his Senior Special Assistant, Emeka Duru, said the call had become necessary in order to meet the expectations of customers and delivery satisfactory values, which would in turn improve business profitability and enhance competitiveness.
He stressed that SON remained the apex standardisation body in Nigeria with the responsibility of formulating and establishing standards “relating to various products, commodities, measurements, processes, materials for the certifying of products in Nigerian commerce and industry.”
“While the main mandate of SON is standards formulation and elaboration, other services carried out by SON as a trade facilitator include testing services, accredited training services and management systems certification, product certification, metrology and instrumentation, inspectorate and compliance activities activities and trade development,” he added.
