Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has reiterated his administration’s determination to restore order and sanity to Onitsha Main Market and its environs through the ongoing redevelopment and regeneration of structures and access roads within the market.

The governor, who spoke during an inspection tour of the market on Monday, said the state government would enforce regulations against street trading and the indiscriminate occupation of roads and walkways around the market, stressing that such measures were necessary to ensure the free movement of people and vehicles.

He added that restoring order around the market would improve safety and help reposition Onitsha Main Market as a major commercial hub in South-East Nigeria.

Soludo described the regeneration project as a practical intervention capable of boosting commercial activities in the market, while assuring traders of the government’s continued support.

During the inspection, the governor toured different sections of the market to assess the quality and progress of the ongoing work. He also interacted with traders, some of whom expressed satisfaction with the development and optimism that the project would be completed ahead of the December 2026 festive trading season.

The regeneration initiative is expected to improve sanitation, strengthen security, enhance drainage infrastructure, upgrade road networks and promote a more organised trading environment within and around the market.

Chairman of Onitsha North Local Government Area, Nweze Tony Nwora, who accompanied the governor on the inspection tour of the market redevelopment project, said the pace of construction demonstrated the state government’s commitment to upgrading infrastructure and creating a cleaner, safer and more conducive environment for traders, residents and visitors.

According to him, the project has already recorded significant progress, including the provision of modern toilet facilities, six boreholes, improved access roads and other essential infrastructure.

“What we witnessed today is clear evidence that the Governor’s vision is gradually becoming a reality,” Nwora said.

The inspection formed part of the state government’s ongoing monitoring of major infrastructure projects aimed at revitalising public facilities and improving the business environment across Anambra State.
