Several military troops are feared dead after their operational vehicle triggered Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), believed to have been planted by Boko Haram, in a restive community in Borno State.

The incident occurred on Monday as a reinforcement team from the military base at Wajuroko in Sabon Gari, Damboa Local Government Area of the state, pursued Boko Haram insurgents following an attack.

Unbeknownst to them, the insurgents had buried IEDs along the route.

An explosion from the IEDs caused significant damage, resulting in the death of some of the troops. An unconfirmed number of troops were also injured in the incident.

The military had not confirmed the attack at the time of filing this report. The area is one of the flashpoints of terrorist attacks in Borno State.

IED attacks on military troops in the counter-insurgency operation in the northeast underscore the complex nature of the war on terror.
