The Sokoto State Government has reassured residents that it is closely monitoring security developments across the state and has put measures in place to safeguard lives and property amid reports that notorious bandit leader Bello Turji has allegedly acquired sophisticated weapons and engaged mercenaries to train his fighters.

The Special Adviser to Governor Ahmed Aliyu on Security Matters, Ahmed Usman, gave the assurance while responding to concerns raised by journalists over the reported activities of the bandit kingpin.

Usman said security agencies were fully aware of developments in banditry-prone areas and were taking proactive steps to address any emerging threats.

“Security is a continuous process, and as a government, we take every intelligence report seriously. We are working closely with the military, police, intelligence agencies and other security formations to ensure that criminal elements do not have the opportunity to threaten the peace and stability of our state.”

The security adviser highlighted efforts by the administration of Ahmed Aliyu to strengthen the state’s security architecture since assuming office.

According to him, the government has consistently provided critical logistical support to security agencies, including operational vehicles, motorcycles, communication equipment, fuel supplies and other resources aimed at improving operational efficiency.

Usman also disclosed that the governor had approved substantial financial interventions to support security operations, intelligence gathering and community-based security initiatives targeted at tackling banditry and other criminal activities.

He said the interventions had significantly enhanced the capacity of security personnel to respond swiftly and effectively to security challenges across the state.

The retired military officer noted that criminal groups often used propaganda and misinformation to spread fear among the public and warned residents against allowing such tactics to undermine confidence in security agencies.

“While we will never underestimate any threat, we are confident in the capacity and preparedness of our security forces to confront and neutralise criminal elements.”

“The sustained operations being carried out by security agencies have continued to put bandits under pressure and limit their ability to operate freely,” he said.

Usman urged residents to remain vigilant and continue providing security agencies with credible and timely information.

“I therefore urge residents to remain calm, vigilant and law-abiding while continuing to support security agencies with credible and timely information.

“The government of Governor Ahmed Aliyu remains fully committed to providing all necessary support to ensure lasting peace, security and development across Sokoto State,” he added.

He reiterated the state government’s commitment to sustaining collaboration with security agencies and other stakeholders to strengthen security and protect communities from criminal activities across the state.
