Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Abuja after he led the Nigeria’s delegation to the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Belém, Brazil.
The event saw Nigeria reaffirm its position as a global leader in climate action and commitment to a sustainable green transition.
At the Leaders’ Climate Summit, hosted by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Shettima represented President Bola Tinubu.

In his address titled, “The Rational Soul of Nature,” he urged world leaders to acknowledge the economic importance of nature and to ensure that substantial financing was directed towards its protection and restoration through fair, accessible and predictable funding channels.
He highlighted Nigeria’s climate agenda as “not just an aspiration, but a solemn national commitment to preserve the planet for future generations.”
According to a statement by his media aide, Stanley Nkwocha, on the sidelines of COP30, Shettima held strategic bilateral discussions focused on carbon market cooperation, aiming to unlock between $2.5 billion and $3 billion annually in carbon finance over the next 10 years. This initiative seeks to accelerate Nigeria’s shift to a low-carbon economy.
The success at COP30 marks a significant step in Nigeria’s environmental leadership on the global stage.
