Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja to represent President Bola Tinubu at the upcoming 30th session of the United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP 30, scheduled for November 6-7 in Belém, Brazil.

The summit, organised and hosted by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, will focus on vital issues such as climate adaptation, forests, biodiversity, and climate justice under the theme “Climate Action and Implementation.”

In a statement by his media aide, Stanley Nkwocha, the Vice President is expected to participate in key discussions, including Nigeria’s climate action address during the general plenary, the launch of the Tropical Forest Forever Fund, and a roundtable chaired by President Lula on Climate and Nature.

“Senator Shettima will also attend the Amazonian Cocktail for Heads of Delegation,” the release added.

Shettima’s agenda includes participation in two critical roundtables on energy transition and the review of the Paris Agreement, emphasizing Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and climate financing. On the sidelines, he will hold bilateral talks aimed at establishing Nigeria’s participation in carbon markets, with estimates suggesting Nigeria could unlock between $2.5 billion and $3 billion annually over the next decade.

Following the summit, the Vice President will travel to Brasília for a bilateral meeting with Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alckmin. The visit aims to strengthen Nigeria’s South-South relations, building on agreements signed during Alckmin’s recent three-day visit to Nigeria, which covered sectors like defence, agriculture, energy, and cultural exchange.

VP Shettima’s engagements in Brazil are expected to boost Nigeria’s climate and diplomatic initiatives, with a return flight scheduled at the conclusion of his official visit.
