Benjamin Sesko’s second-half goal gave Manchester United a vital 1-0 Premier League victory over Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, extending their undefeated start under interim manager Michael Carrick.
United appeared determined to get off to a strong start in Merseyside after winning just one of their previous five away league games.
Within four minutes, Carrick’s team came very close to ending the draw as Jordan Pickford and James Tarkowski combined to block Amad Diallo’s low attempt on the goal line.
As the first half went on, the visitors continued to seem more dangerous than the other team, as Diogo Dalot’s strong long-range effort went just wide of the goal.
Everton improved before halftime, thankful to still be tied. James Garner had their greatest opportunity, but Senne Lammens held his free kick admirably.
Harrison Armstrong’s curling attempt from 12 yards out was saved by Lammens inside a minute of the restart, giving the Toffees the lead after a rather uneventful first session.

Shortly after, United came near, but Bryan Mbeumo, who was positioned advantageously in the box, wastedfully fired over the bar.
After losing five of their last nine Premier League games at home, David Moyes’ team persisted in trying to score in the closing third, but United’s incredible counterattacking goal in the 71st minute relieved their strain.
With a raking pass into Mbeumo’s path, Cunha initiated the Red Devils’ play. The Cameroonian waited for Sesko, a substitute, to score a fantastic first-time goal into the far corner.
Faced with the prospect of another home defeat, Everton rallied in pursuit of a late equaliser, as Michael Keane saw a thunderous effort from range tipped over by Lammens.
But the Toffees didn’t give up easily, and Lammens held solid in the visitors’ goal once more, stopping Tyrique George in the final moments.
That ultimately turned out to be Everton’s last opportunity, as Manchester United fought through the last moments to earn a well-deserved three points and close the gap on Aston Villa in third place by three points.
