Senegal plans AFCON trophy parade in Paris amid title dispute

Senegal will parade the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy in Paris ahead of their international friendly against Peru, in a symbolic show of defiance following a controversial decision by Confederation of African Football (CAF) to strip them of the title.

The Lions of Teranga had initially secured their second AFCON crown on January 18 after defeating Morocco 1-0 in a tense final.

However, the match ended in chaos after Senegal players walked off the pitch in protest of a stoppage-time penalty awarded to Morocco while the game was still goalless.

CAF later overturned the result, awarding Morocco a 3-0 victory.

Senegal’s football authorities have rejected the ruling, with the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) describing the decision as an “administrative robbery.”

FSF President Abdoulaye Fall said the country would not accept the outcome, vowing to continue the fight beyond the pitch.

“Senegal will not bend the knee and will not compromise its values,” added Fall. “Our fight now transcends the football pitch.”

The federation has since lodged an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which confirmed receipt of the case and pledged to deliver a ruling as quickly as possible.

As part of their protest, Senegal will proceed with a planned trophy parade at the Stade de France before facing Peru, underlining their refusal to recognise CAF’s decision.
