Senegal demands CAF corruption probe over AFCON title decision

Senegal has called for an independent international investigation into corruption following the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) controversial decision to strip the country of its 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title and hand it to Morocco.

The drama dates back to the final in Rabat on January 18, when several Senegalese players walked off the pitch in protest after a late penalty was awarded to Morocco. Though the players eventually returned and Morocco missed the penalty, Pape Gueye scored in extra time to secure what was initially a 1-0 win for Senegal.

CAF’s sudden reversal on March 17 cited regulations on leaving the field, officially recording a 3-0 win in Morocco’s favour.

Senegal’s government condemned the ruling as “grossly illegal and profoundly unjust,” with spokeswoman Marie Rose Khady Fatou Faye confirming the country would pursue all legal avenues, including an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

The statement also highlighted concerns for 18 Senegalese fans detained in Morocco during the match for alleged hooliganism, with sentences ranging from three months to a year in prison and fines up to $545. Faye pledged government oversight to ensure their cases are resolved fairly.

The CAF decision has provoked outrage among Senegalese supporters, many calling it “a disgrace for Africa,” and has intensified scrutiny over governance and transparency within continental football administration.
