The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has dismissed Pape Thiaw as head coach of the Teranga Lions following the country’s exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The federation announced the decision on Sunday after Senegal’s campaign ended with a 3-2 extra-time defeat to Belgium in the Round of 32, despite leading by two goals during the match.
Thiaw, who took charge in December 2024, endured a difficult World Cup campaign. Senegal lost their opening group-stage matches to France and Norway before a commanding 5-0 victory over Iraq secured qualification for the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams.
In a statement, the FSF said Thiaw’s dismissal followed a comprehensive review of the team’s performances and future direction, describing the decision as one taken in the best interests of Senegalese football.

“A thorough evaluation of the sporting results and prospects of the national team,” the statement reads.
Adding that the move was made “in the best interests of Senegalese football”.
The coach’s departure also comes amid reported unrest within the squad. Midfielder Pape Gueye recently announced a temporary retirement from international football, saying he would not return until changes were made to the team’s technical crew.
Thiaw’s spell in charge was also marked by controversy after the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final against Morocco. He instructed his players to leave the pitch following a stoppage-time penalty awarded to the hosts. Although Senegal returned to win the match in extra time, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) later overturned the result, awarded the title to Morocco and stripped Senegal of the trophy over the walk-off.
The FSF has challenged CAF’s ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and is awaiting a decision, while preparations are underway to appoint a new head coach before Senegal’s next international fixtures.
