The Nigerian Senate has condemned in strong terms the recent anti-Nigerian protest in Ghana, describing the development as a setback to regional unity and a threat to the historical ties that have long bound both countries.

The protest, which has circulated widely on social media, featured a group of Ghanaians calling for the expulsion of Nigerians over allegations of unacceptable behaviour within Ghanaian communities. The viral footage has sparked concern among the Nigerian public and diaspora stakeholders.

Responding to the incident, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organizations, Senator Aniekan Bassey, described the protest as “unfortunate and misaligned with the spirit of pan-Africanism and the protocols guiding inter-state relations under ECOWAS.”

“We must not allow isolated grievances or misinformation to erode decades of bilateral goodwill between Nigeria and Ghana. At a time when regional cohesion is most needed, leaders and citizens alike must show restraint and prioritize peace,” Senator Bassey said.

The Senate Committee expressed confidence in the ongoing diplomatic engagements between both nations, praising the immediate response of the Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, and the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, for acting swiftly to address rising tensions.

The Committee also commended the Nigerian and Ghanaian High Commissioners for maintaining open diplomatic lines and working collaboratively to reassure the public and de-escalate potential diplomatic fallout.

Reassuring Nigerians living in Ghana, Senator Bassey noted that authorities from both countries are committed to ensuring the protection of Nigerian citizens, and to promoting continued peaceful coexistence.

He urged Nigerians in Ghana to remain calm and law-abiding, advising against the use of inflammatory language or actions that could further strain relations.

“The Senate Committee stands with every Nigerian who continues to uphold our values abroad. We call for vigilance, peace, and confidence in our diplomatic institutions, which are actively managing this issue in the national interest,” the statement concluded.

The Committee further called on Ghanaian authorities to address any grievances within the framework of regional law, fairness, and mutual respect, while reaffirming the shared responsibility of both nations to preserve peace across West Africa.
