Saudi Arabia has announced Wednesday, April 10, as the date for Eid-El-Fitr after the sighting of the crescent Moon eluded observers on Monday evening.

With the new Moon undetected, the Kingdom has determined that the holy month of Ramadan will last for a full 30 days this year, extending the period of fasting and spiritual reflection.

The declaration was made following reports that the crescent Moon, which marks the end of Ramadan and the beginning of Eid-El-Fitr, was not spotted in Saudi Arabia on Monday. Haramain News, a prominent news outlet in the Kingdom, confirmed the decision via its official Twitter handle. In a statement, the outlet conveyed, “The crescent moon was NOT sighted in Saudi Arabia. Therefore, Eid-El-Fitr will be celebrated on Wednesday, 10th April 2024.” The announcement was accompanied by prayers for the continued blessings of the holy month and the acceptance of prayers and deeds.

Haramain News, known as one of Saudi Arabia’s leading news mediums, serves as a reliable source of information for millions of residents and Muslims worldwide.

Meanwhile, in Nigeria, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Saad Abubakar, has directed the Muslim community to remain vigilant for the sighting of the new crescent Moon of Shawwal. As per tradition, the sighting of the Moon will determine the start of Eid celebrations in Nigeria.

The differing sightings underscore the variations in lunar observation practices across different regions, highlighting the diversity within the Muslim community’s religious observances.

With Saudi Arabia marking Eid-El-Fitr for April 10 after the non-sighting of the crescent Moon on Monday, Muslims around the world prepare to celebrate the conclusion of Ramadan and the beginning of the festive season. As the faithful eagerly anticipate the joyous occasion, they continue to engage in prayers and acts of worship during the remaining days of the holy month, seeking the blessings and mercy of Allah.
