Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Dr. Doyin Okupe, a former Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Olusegun Obasanjo and Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to President Goodluck Jonathan. Okupe passed away at the age of 72.
In a statement released on Friday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, Governor Sanwo-Olu described Okupe’s death as a significant loss to Nigeria, particularly the people of Ogun State.
Sanwo-Olu, who is also the Chairman of the South-West Governors Forum, commiserated with Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, over the loss of one of the state’s prominent political figures.
“On behalf of my family, the people, and the government of Lagos, I mourn the passing of Dr. Doyin Okupe, a renowned political strategist and former presidential aide,” Sanwo-Olu said in the statement.
Dr. Okupe was well known for his pivotal role in Nigeria’s politics, contributing to the country’s political landscape for over three decades. He served as the Director-General of Peter Obi’s 2023 Presidential Campaign, the National Publicity Secretary of the National Republican Convention (NRC) during the Third Republic, and also worked as a media adviser for prominent political figures, including Senator Bukola Saraki and Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
A trained physician, Okupe also made significant contributions to the healthcare sector. He co-founded the Royal Cross Medical Centre in Obalende, Lagos, and worked in both public and private healthcare facilities across Nigeria.
Governor Sanwo-Olu offered his condolences, stating that Okupe’s departure is a profound loss, especially to the political class. He prayed for the repose of Okupe’s soul and strength for his family, friends, and associates to cope with the irreplaceable loss.
